Types of crypto exchanges: understanding the differences

Crypto exchanges differ in functionality and architecture โ€” from centralized platforms that hold access keys on their own servers (CEX) to fully decentralized protocols that you connect to from your personal wallet, where you control the entire process yourself (DEX).

Understanding the types means understanding where your capital is held and who controls the trades.

  • CEX platforms carry the risk of your funds being frozen โ€” for political reasons, for example, because of sanctions against your country. That is exactly why it is important to study carefully which crypto exchange is suitable for use by country.
  • A DEX does not create such problems, because the whole process is decentralized and you control the situation yourself. But remember that the more freedom you have, the more responsibility you carry โ€” if you lose access to your wallet, nobody will be able to restore it or help you, unlike the support teams on CEX platforms.

So we have covered the types of cryptocurrency exchange that exist; now let us look at the types of trading available within these exchanges.

Crypto exchanges with margin trading

Margin trading lets you open positions larger than your own balance: the user borrows from the platform against their deposit as collateral, and the exchange provides them with leverage.

This format is suitable only for experienced traders, because it requires careful risk management to minimize the number of liquidations you face.

Liquidation is the process in which the exchange forcibly takes your collateral deposit if you start trading at a loss. This is how the exchange protects itself against losses. Remember that leveraged trading is structured so that the exchange always earns: trade at a profit and the exchange collects its interest on the credit provided; trade at a loss and the exchange simply takes your collateral with the interest built into it. Either way, only the trader bears the losses.

Whereas in ordinary spot trading a fall in the asset price puts only part of your capital at risk, in margin trading your entire deposit is under threat even from the slightest price swings. So treat this type of trading with the utmost caution

Example: BybitBybit BitgetBitget HTXHTX โ€” major platforms with leverage of up to 100x, a well-developed liquidation system and derivatives support.

Spot cryptocurrency exchanges

On spot everything is simpler โ€” transactions happen โ€œhere and nowโ€, that is, at the current market price. With this trading format the exchange earns only the minimal difference between the buy price and the sell price that it offers traders. In professional language this is called the spread.

The best way to describe this term is with a bank as an example: it buys dollars from the public at AED 3.65 and sells them at AED 3.72. That AED 0.07 difference is the spread.

Please note that the dollar exchange rate may differ by the time you read this article.

This is the most transparent and safest format for beginners, since trades are made without borrowed funds.

Example: OKXOKX, Gate.ioGate.io, MEXCMEXC โ€” exchanges with high liquidity, a convenient interface and low spot fees.

Cryptocurrency exchanges for options trading

Options give you the right (but not the obligation) to buy or sell an asset at a predetermined price in the future.

Imagine you want to buy a car, but you do not have the money right now and you know that the car you want will cost more in the future. In that case you go to the seller and propose signing a contract stating that, after some time, you will come back and buy his car at the price agreed in advance and set out in the agreement. Later on you can sell that contract (that is, the right to buy the car at a fixed price) to someone else. This kind of contract is precisely what an option is.

The options market is attractive because you can trade assets outside the โ€œhere and nowโ€ framework, anticipating market moves and acting ahead of them. Of course, this trading format is suitable only for experienced market participants: if you buy an option on oil with the right to buy at $50 per barrel and by expiry the price is, say, $40, nobody will buy it from you and you will have to book a loss.

International corporations and market whales use options for hedging and reducing risk, as well as in fixed-income strategies. Once you get to grips with it, this is a very good instrument that will open up new financial horizons for you.

Example: BitfinexBitfinex, PhemexPhemex, KuCoinKuCoin โ€” platforms offering futures, options and other derivative instruments.

How to start trading on a crypto exchange: a step-by-step guide

1
Choose a platform

Compare the terms on Toprato and assess the fees and available pairs.

2
Register

Enter your e-mail, create a strong password and confirm your account from the email you receive.

3
Complete verification (KYC)

This will raise your limits and reduce the risk of account restrictions.

4
Fund your account

Via P2P (trading directly between exchange users), a bank card or the crypto exchange's internal wallet.

5
Make your first purchase

Choose an asset (USDT, for example), enter the amount and select the order type.

i

Tip. If you use a decentralized platform, use a cold wallet โ€” it is the best protection against losing your funds and saves you from constantly auditing your own security. Modern exchanges usually support such wallets, and it is worth taking advantage of that for peace of mind while trading.

Toprato is a crypto exchange monitoring service that helps traders and investors navigate market conditions, compare platforms and pick those where crypto trading is genuinely safe and cost-effective.

Everything in one interface, with no unnecessary advertising and with up-to-date data on fees and liquidity.

Use it and trade profitably!

Pre-registration checklist

This section is not about fear but about basic hygiene before you deposit money: the sooner you check the restrictions, the fewer unpleasant surprises you will face.

๐Ÿ”Before your first deposit
  • check KYC and withdrawal limits
  • compare withdrawal fees on the network you need
  • enable 2FA and an anti-phishing code
  • make a test withdrawal of a small amount
๐Ÿ’ŽFor large amounts
  • check VIP tiers and reduced fees
  • review OTC terms or conditions for large trades
  • enable whitelisted withdrawal addresses
  • do not keep all your capital on a single platform

Fee example

Beginners often look only at the 0.10% trading fee, but the final cost depends on the P2P rate, the spread and the withdrawal fee. Below is a sample calculation for a $1,010 (AED 3,700) purchase at a rate of about 3.70 AED per USDT (roughly 1,000 USDT).

Purchase amount$1,010 (AED 3,700)
P2P rate difference of 0.02 AED per USDTapproximately $5-6
0.10% spot fee on the exchangeabout $1
USDT withdrawal on a network with a 1 USDT feeabout $1
Total differenceabout $7-8
โšก
Takeaway for the user: the fee shown in the table is only part of the cost. Before trading, compare not only % Spot or % Futures, but also the P2P rate, the spread, the withdrawal fee, the available network and your account limits. The figures in this case study illustrate how the calculation works. Before a real trade, check the current rate, the P2P offer and the withdrawal fee on the exchange you have chosen.

We answer your questions

What basic security measures should a user follow?

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA), preferably via an authenticator app rather than SMS. Do not keep all your funds on one platform โ€” spread your capital across different exchanges. Verify the site address and its certificate, change your passwords regularly and use complex character combinations instead of simple words.

Is verification (KYC) mandatory on an exchange?

Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) do not require verification. Centralized platforms apply strict deposit and withdrawal limits without KYC, so it is better to complete document verification for full functionality.

How can I check an exchange's reliability before registering?

Look at the year it was founded, its trading volumes, and the licenses and audits it holds. On Toprato this data is collected in platform cards and updated regularly for every exchange.

Which exchange is best for a beginner in your country?

A beginner-friendly exchange has a multi-language interface, fiat support and a clear mobile app. Suitable options include Bybit, OKX and MEXC.

Which exchange should I choose if I trade with a small amount?

Look at deposit and withdrawal fees and at the minimum deposit. P2P is usually more cost-effective โ€” the exchange fee there is 0%. Look for platforms that support local P2P so you can save money at the start.

What is the difference between a limit order and a market order?

A limit order executes at the price you set in advance: if the market reaches it, the trade goes through automatically; if not, the order stays pending. A market order executes immediately at the current price. The first gives you control over the price, the second gives you speed.

How can I reduce trading fees on an exchange?

Almost every exchange has its own token (BNB, KCS, HT), and trading with it usually comes with reduced fees. Fees also fall as your trading volume grows: platforms offer VIP discounts and other perks.

What fees will I face when withdrawing crypto to an external wallet?

There are two: the exchange's own fee (which the platform charges as revenue) and the network fee (gas fee), which goes to the blockchain for processing the transaction. The first depends on the exchange, the second on network congestion.

Which deposit methods are the cheapest and fastest?

The fastest option is P2P: 0% fees and instant crediting, though it requires some experience. The alternative is a bank card or transfers through services built into the exchange. If both options are available, choose P2P.
