Staking on exchanges: real returns and hidden risks

APY vs real income: what exchange marketers leave unsaid

Exchanges advertise APYs of up to 20% and above. Real income in fiat comprises three components: the interest yield (APY), the price movement of the staked coin, and personal income tax (13-15% in your country). Staking ETH at 5% APY while ETH falls 30% over the year = an actual loss of -25% in fiat terms.

APY (Annual Percentage Yield) — the annual percentage yield including reinvestment. For stablecoins (USDT, USDC) price risk is minimal; for volatile coins it is the decisive factor.
Flexible vs fixed staking — flexible staking lets you withdraw funds at any time (with a yield 1–3% lower), while fixed staking locks coins for 7–120 days at a higher rate.
Platform risk — funds staked on an exchange are held in the exchange's own accounts. Under sanctions or a withdrawal freeze, staked coins may become inaccessible until they are unlocked.

Sample calculation: USDT in flexible staking at 8% APY. On $1,000 over a year: $80 of income. Tax at 13% = $10.4. Net income: $69.6, or 6.96% per annum. Compared with a local currency bank deposit at 16%, the gain comes in a stablecoin with no currency risk.

How to choose a staking platform by country

For long-term staking, platform reliability matters more than an extra 0.5% on the rate. Funds locked up because of sanctions or exchange trouble are the main risk, and it cancels out any yield.

Public reserves — exchanges that have passed a Proof-of-Reserves audit (Bitget, Bybit, OKX) prove that client assets actually exist. This is a baseline criterion for a platform you entrust funds to for months.
Track record with local users — exchanges that imposed no restrictions on local users in 2022–2025 are more predictable going forward.
Withdrawal limits after staking — make sure the platform's daily withdrawal limits allow you to move the full amount out within a reasonable time and without excessive KYC.
